VEHICLE DONATIONS CAN BUILD SCHOLARSHIPS AT BCCC

A popular fundraising program for the BCCC Foundation to raise funds for scholarships and programs is through the sale of donated vehicles. The Foundation may accept vehicle donations such as cars, trucks, and motor homes that when sold by the Foundation, the proceeds would be used to create scholarships and assist instructional programs. The BCCC Foundation needs funds to create scholarships with your tax-deductible gifts of vehicle donations. The IRS and state charity officials provide guidelines for charities operating vehicle donation programs through IRS Publication 4302. A companion brochure, A Donor's Guide to Vehicle Donations, provides guidelines for individuals who donate vehicles. Call the BCCC Foundation Office at 410-462-8328 for more information.

Daughter Honors Mother’s Years of Teaching Nurses with Peggy Jordan Scholarship

BALTIMORE – All it took Tumara Jordan was a few seconds to decide what to get her mother Peggy as a retirement gift for 35 years as a nurse educator at Baltimore City Community College.

“Education has always mattered to everyone in our family,” Tumara said. “It’s been one of the single most important things.” Tumara surprised her mother at her retirement party by announcing she had started the Peggy Jordan Nursing Scholarship through the BCCC Foundation.

“My mother teaches her students almost like they’re her own children,” she continued. “Over the years, students were free to call her at home just about any time of the day or night with questions. Mom always took the calls. She dedicated her career to students and it’s been so rewarding for her to watch them become nurses,” she said.

Originally from Jackson, Miss., Peggy Jordan studied nursing at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama before graduating from the University of Maryland with a master’s degree in nursing. She joined the nursing staff at the old Provident Hospital and subsequently, began a teaching career at Provident’s Helene Fuld School of Nursing. From there, 35 years ago, she became a nursing professor at BCCC.

Upon learning of the newfound scholarship fund bearing her name, Professor Jordan would be at a loss for words. “Is this for real?” she exclaimed. “This is the best retirement gift anyone could ever ask for. It exceeds anything I could have dreamed of. I thank my daughter because the scholarship will help deserving nursing students achieve their dreams of becoming nurses.”

Through her own job as a group marketing manager at Verizon, Tumara has parlayed her personal donation of $2,500 into an initial scholarship fund of $5,000 with the help of a Verizon corporate matching contribution. “I hope many of her friends and former students at BCCC learn about the Peggy Jordan Scholarship and join with me to build it into a permanent endowed scholarship one day,” said Tumara, who hails from Silver Spring, Md.

BCCC Foundation chair Gregory Finnegan called Jordan’s gift “a marvelous tribute to her mother’s time at BCCC. Our foundation is honored as well to play a role in recognizing Professor Jordan’s dedication to nursing and her students.”

He lauded Verizon’s role in the scholarship through its matching gift program for employees and retirees. “We like to encourage anyone who contributes to the BCCC Foundation to determine if their own company has a matching program that can really grow the amount of the donation,” he said.

“We salute and congratulate Peggy Jordan for her dedication and service in the BCCC nursing department,” said BCCC President Dr. Carolane Williams. “Tumara has created a legacy that truly honors her mother but it also becomes a testimonial for each nursing student in the future who becomes the recipient of the Peggy Jordan Nursing Scholarship.”

The Jordan Scholarship will be awarded for the first time this fall to a student accepted into the BCCC Registered Nurse program. For more information, contact the BCCC Foundation Office at 410-462-8328.
